Senior Regional Safety Manager (32829)

First Transit Canada is hiring a Senior Regional Safety Manager.  This will be a work from home position with the ideal candidate located in either British Columbia or Alberta.


Job Purpose: The Senior Regional Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing and administering First Transit Canada’s interprovincial divisional Occupational Health and Safety program, abilities/claims management program, and providing OH&S support to all members of the FTC Team.  Provides Safety Support to the SVP and RVP of Operations for the Canadian Division.  Guides, Inspires, Measures, Evaluates, Teaches and Supports field operations in a diverse multi-site, multi-provincial organization


Major Responsibilities:

  • Is responsible for strategic oversight of company safety and risk management efforts.  Instills safety awareness to all levels of the company and works with the Regional Safety Manager and location personnel to promote safety culture to ensure all safety expectations are understood and implemented
  • Drives safety performance solutions that support the Canadian Division SVP and assists the RVP in directing adherence to First Transit Canada Safety Principles. Coordinates and facilitates performance improvement programs across the Canadian Division to ensure constant improvement through the application of all available tools
  • Key responsibility in managing and maintaining all Certificates of Recognition (COR); demonstrating the Company’s commitment to protecting the wellbeing of all employees and a strong safety culture
  • Oversees all training in the Canadian Division for quality and accuracy of information presented to existing personnel and new employees. Oversees trainer development including curriculum writing and presentation for location and regional training teams with focused delivery of progression of learning for drivers to ensure only the safest, most competent, responsible, and professional drivers are behind the wheel of First Transit buses
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable provincial and territorial Occupational Health and Safety legislation
  • Ensures alignment with provincial and territorial governmental regulations and corporate policies and recognized best practices regarding all HSE information
  • Develops and monitors policies and procedural guidelines to reduce liability exposure from employee injuries, vehicle collisions, and public safety issues. Promotes on-going risk assessments and prescribes injury prevention measures to eliminate risk in the workplace and risk-taking behaviour of employees
  • Has indirect financial responsibility and is a member of FGA Regional business group cost control/revenue leadership team including participation in budget process for safety as applicable
  • Provides overall leadership to the Canadian Division safety personnel.  Includes the establishment of programs and standards to ensure all department personnel are trained, supported, and evaluated.  Assists with establishing organizational structures and appropriate staffing for the department.  Responsible for assuring management staff development and succession planning within the Safety team to enhance individual and group performance.  Actively participates in mentoring the Regional Safety Manager and all location safety and training personnel
  • Performs risk and trend analysis and develops controls for reporting. Develops, designs, and implements, with the assistance of the Corp Safety Team, policies, and training programs to address collision, incident, and injury trends
  • Oversees First Transit Canada hiring standards, drug and alcohol policy enforcement, OH&S compliance requirements for the business including operations, maintenance, and facility workplace safety
  • Participates in corporate, regional, and functional plan committees and task forces as a member of the senior leadership team, as necessary
  • Supervises safety programs including supporting emergency wardens and defusers
  • Shares common goals and direct relationship with Region Director(s) of HR, Maintenance, Business Development and Finance in support of strategic plan objectives for the region
  • Initiates and manages strategic alliances with industry and regulatory organizations
  • Performing other related duties as required/ assigned


Minimum Education & Certifications required:

  • Post-secondary education in related field of study including OH&S; Abilities Management and RTW CRSP/CRST Designation; Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) and/or Certified Return to Work Coordinator (CRTWC) designation preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered


Experience & Skills Required:

  • Minimum 5 years related experience in public transportation including conventional, paratransit and industrial operations, safety, and abilities management
  • Thorough knowledge of federal, provincial, and territorial OHS regulations
  • Computer literate with strong working knowledge of Office 365 including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks, multi-task and manage time effectively
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, with ability to appropriately interact with employees of all levels including drivers, customers, senior management, client representatives, union officials and the general public
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Fluent in English
  • Self-starter and highly motivated
  • Demonstrate regular and consistent attendance and punctuality


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

  • Office environment
  • Ability to regularly travel to all divisional operating locations throughout Canada up to 75% of the time
  • Incumbent must be able to move about the office and in company facilities outside the office (e.g., bus; parking lot; industrial camps)
  • Utilize standard office equipment; access filing system/cabinets; and communicate effectively and efficiently in person or by telephone
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and current Canadian passport
  • Work schedule will be determined based on company needs
